Slashy Hong Kong Films
Hong Kong films are some of the slashiest ever made. I can't believe they don't know they are doing it but ...
The top two slashiest directors are:
1. Chang Cheh (affectionately know by me and my gang as 'Auntie Chang')
2. John Woo (who studied under him...ahem)
I'll be making a list of the slashiest films I've seen. Slash fans everywhere let me know your faves and additions!
The winner for slashiest old school film ever goes to Triple Irons/The New One Armed Swordsman, directed by Auntie Chang and starring the exquisite Ti Lung and David Chiang Da Wei [now sometimes known as John]
This is one of my favorites, with David on Ti Lung like white on rice. David's one good hand is never far from Ti Lung [his butt usually] and they stare at each other lovingly while refering to each other as "brother". You have to see this to believe it. I can't even write any slash about this film because its all there on screen to see.
This is followed closely by "The Pirate" also directed by Auntie Chang and starring David and Ah Lung.
The first time David's Character sees Ti Lung's Pirate, he cruises him so hard I was surprised he didn't burst into flames. If he slobbered any harder, he would have drowned. This I have written slash about...
The slashiest new HK film ever used to be Curry and pepper but it has been replaced by Cheap Killers.
No subtlety in this film gang. Huge amounts of petting, groping and fondling. Alex Fong is the top and Sonny Chan is not the top. I howled.
Curry and Pepper is relegated to the second slashiest film of the modern era. However is is far subtler and a better movie than Cheap Killers.
Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Stephen Chow Sing Chi share a tiny HK apartment that has only one bed... Jacky is constantly draped over Stephen and we won't get into where his hands are. The snuggling scenes put me on the floor. This also got me to put pen to paper as it were.
And third for the modern HK scene is John Woo's The Killer. Oh please let me see Danny Lee taking that bullet out of Chow Yun Fat again... Riotious. Danny staring at all the pictures of Chow goh.... NARF.
The Slashiest Films of Hong Kong List:
- Triple Irons/New One Armed Swordsman - David Chiang and Ti Lung.
- Duel of the Iron Fist - David Chiang and Ti Lung.
- The Pirate - David Chiang and Ti Lung.
- Avenging Eagle - Alexander Fu Sheng and Ti Lung.
- The Killer - Danny Lee and Chow Yun Fat.
- Curry and Pepper - Stephen Chow Sing Chi and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau.
- Lord of Huangjou
- GOD.com - Louis Koo Tin Lok and Andrew Lin.
- Deadly Duo - David Chiang and Ti Lung.
- My Hero - Wilson Lam and Stephen Chow Sing Chi.
- Final Justice - Danny Lee and Stephen Chow Sing Chi.
- Blood Brothers - David Chiang and Ti Lung. This elicited the classic line, "he didn't know whether to kill him or kiss him..."
- Last Hurrah for Chilvary - Damian Lau and Wei Pai. Probably the prettiest couple.
- A Better Tomarrow - Chow Yun Fat and Ti Lung.
- Clan of Amazons
- Faithfully Yours - Stephen Chow and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau.
- ZU: Warriors of the Magic Mountain - Damian Lau and Adam Cheng as well as some nice interplay between Yuen Biao and Meng Hoi.
- Days of Being Dumb - Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau.
- Cheap Killers - Alex Fong and Sonny Chan
- more to come...
American Cinema has its share of slashy stuff too...
Most recently we had The Corrupter. Lots of Brotherly moments in that one. I recently re watched Ben Hur...Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd, Oh my. The Shadow had Alec Baldwin anf John Lone all over each other... Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner in The 10 Commandments, Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison in The Agony and the Extasy. Almost anything Film Noir. (am I seeing a Charlton Heston pattern here?)
