Life with a Mac Portable
I have since upgraded to a PowerMac but my heart belongs to my Portable. I will still be using it for most work and I will be keeping on this page whatever useful information I can find. However, Mosaic1.0.3 will let you see the Gifs. (still no Jpegs...) To make a Web Page, you might try"Simple HTML Editor" (SHE) Its a cool editor and very straightforward to use! Make sure to get the small version. It fits nicely in a plus/Portable/PB screen Since Ram doubler doesn't work on a 68000, try Optimem. It is real helpful in freeing up RAM and allocating it where you want it. For a word processor, I can not recommend WriteNow 4.0 highly enough. You can still run it off a disk! I have successfully done page layout on QuarkXpress 3.0. The images will even block out pretty well. FileMaker Pro works fine and a lot quicker than on a color machine. For graphics, I use Superpaint, 2.0 and 3.0. The are small and efficient for B&W work. For telcom, I use White Knight 11.00. I have used this since it was Red Ryder and shareware and it is excellent. I have also been told that SoftPC will run on the Portable, giving you DOS access, should you need that. My Zip Drive also works seamlessly. And boy was I glad of the storage! I like the Supra Express modem because it plugs onto the ADB port for power, so that is one less power cord to clutter up your desk. Their Fax software also works pretty well. Supplies for the Portable can be tough but there are couple of places that will actually know what you are talking about:
